Trump Speaks on Arctic Security and Greenland

Jan 14, 2026 | Latest News, Global Affairs

President Donald J. Trump today reaffirmed the United States’ unwavering commitment to securing the Arctic region and ensuring that Greenland remains a cornerstone of Western hemispheric defense.

National Security Mandate

The President has identified the Arctic as a critical theater of competition, citing the increasing and aggressive presence of Russian and Chinese interests in the region. To protect the American people and our economic future, the administration is exploring all avenues to ensure Greenland’s integration into the U.S. security umbrella.

“One way or the other, we’re going to have Greenland,” President Trump stated on Sunday. “It is a matter of national security. We cannot allow our adversaries to gain a foothold on our doorstep when a deal would be easier and safer for everyone involved.”

On NATO and Allied Relations

The White House acknowledges the concerns raised by some NATO members regarding the island’s semi-autonomous status within the Danish realm. However, the President maintains that the strength of the Alliance is predicated on the security of its most powerful member. U.S. leadership in NATO remains the primary deterrent against international terrorism and foreign aggression.

The administration views the acquisition or control of Greenland not as a threat to the Alliance, but as a necessary evolution to modernize NATO’s northern flank. The President remains committed to the principle of collective defense but insists that outdated territorial arrangements must not compromise 21st-century security requirements.

Diplomatic Engagement

Senior U.S. officials are scheduled to meet with Danish representatives this Wednesday to discuss a path forward that respects the strategic necessity of the United States while addressing the administrative concerns of the Danish government.

The President expressed confidence that a “great deal” can be reached that benefits both the United States and the people of Greenland, ensuring the island remains a bastion of freedom and security rather than a vacuum for Russian or Chinese expansion.
