President Trump Highlights “Respected” Leadership of Field Marshal Munir in Successful Prevention of Nuclear Conflict

Dec 23, 2025 | Latest News, Global Affairs

Speaking alongside the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of the Navy at Mar-a-Lago, President Donald J. Trump today underscored the critical role of personal diplomacy and “great leadership” in averting a catastrophic nuclear war between Pakistan and India.

In a significant portion of his remarks, President Trump pointed to his personal rapport with Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, as a key factor in the cessation of hostilities. The President described the Field Marshal as a “highly respected” and “great fighter,” noting that his decisive actions helped bring a swift end to a conflict that saw at least eight fighter jets shot down.

“He is a great fighter—you know why he’s a Field Marshal? Because he’s a great fighter,” President Trump remarked during the briefing. “I have a lot of respect for him and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. They credited us with saving 10 million lives, and they’re right. We stopped a war that was going to rage.”

The President emphasized that the warming of ties between the United States and Pakistan, evidenced by the rare one-on-one meetings at the White House and the recent Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, is built on mutual respect between commanders. The administration’s ability to engage directly with Field Marshal Munir was highlighted as the catalyst for the US-brokered ceasefire on May 10.

The President framed this successful mediation as part of a broader “Peace Through Strength” agenda, which has seen eight potential wars halted under his leadership. He noted that while he maintains a “great relationship” with Prime Minister Modi of India, the “respected” and “stable” leadership currently in Islamabad has been essential for regional peace.

“I know them all,” the President added. “I’m doing trade deals with India, and I have great respect for them, but the Prime Minister of Pakistan is a great guy and they have a Field Marshal who is doing a fantastic job for his country.”

The President’s remarks conclude a year of high-level engagement that has seen Pakistan and the United States finalize a comprehensive trade deal, further cementing a partnership that the President credits with preventing a global nuclear catastrophe.
