Pakistan and China solidified their commitment to bilateral cooperation on Monday with the signing of three memoranda of understanding (MoUs) focused on water desalination, agricultural technology, and the tea industry. The signing ceremony, witnessed by President Asif Ali Zardari, underscores a joint effort to advance practical collaboration in sectors critical to both nations.

A significant agreement was forged between the Sindh local government and Lucion Environmental Technology Group to develop a seawater desalination project in Karachi. This initiative aims to significantly augment the city’s water supply, addressing a crucial need for its growing population. Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon and Lucion Group Chairman Yuhui, also secretary of the Party Branch, signed the MoU, signaling a strong commitment from both sides.
Minister Memon also inked a second MoU between the Sindh local government and Long Ping Hi-tech Information Company, paving the way for cooperation in cutting-edge agricultural technology. This partnership, formalized with the signature of Chairman Chen Zhixin, promises to modernize farming practices and boost agricultural output.
The third MoU brought together Meskay & Femtee Trading Company, Hunan Tea Group, and Jiaolong International Technology (Hainan) to foster collaboration across the entire tea industry value chain. Senator Saleem Mandviwalla, representing Pakistan, and Hunan Tea Group Chairman Zhou Chongwang and Hao Jiaolong, Chairman of Hainan Jiaolong International Trade Technology, representing China, signed the agreement. This initiative seeks to support the development of the tea industry in both countries, strengthening economic, trade, and people-to-people ties.
The ceremony was attended by key officials, including MNA Naveed Qamar, Sindh Chief Secretary Syed Asif Hyder Shah, and Pakistan’s Ambassador to China Khalil Hashmi.
In a separate event, President Zardari bestowed the Sitara-i-Pakistan award upon Professor Pan Xiangbin in Changsha, recognizing his outstanding contributions to cardiac care. Professor Pan’s work includes the treatment of Pakistani children with congenital heart disease and the training of local medical professionals.
President Zardari’s week-long visit to China, which began on Saturday, includes engagements in the Hunan and Hainan provinces, all aimed at bolstering economic and trade cooperation.
On Sunday, the President emphasized Pakistan’s keen interest in closer collaboration with China in areas such as seed technology, agricultural research, and modern farming practices during a meeting with the secretary of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in Hunan. He also toured the facilities of heavy equipment manufacturer Sany Heavy Industry Co. Ltd. and the Hunan Tea Group in Changsha.
