Democrats in the US House of Representatives have strongly criticised President Donald Trump’s latest threats against Iran, urging Republicans to “put patriotic duty over party loyalty” and immediately return to Congress to end what they called a “reckless war of choice.”
In a joint statement on Tuesday, House Democrats expressed shock at Trump’s warning that “a whole civilisation will die tonight” if Iran does not reopen the Strait of Hormuz by his deadline of 8pm ET on April 8 (3:30am in Tehran).
“Donald Trump is completely unhinged. His statement, threatening to eradicate an entire civilisation, shocks the conscience and requires a decisive congressional response,” the statement read.

The Democrats demanded that the House come back into session immediately to vote on ending the conflict before it spirals into a wider war.
They accused Republicans of enabling Trump’s “deeply dangerous and extreme behaviour” for years and warned that the ongoing conflict has already cost American lives, driven up gas prices, and wasted billions of taxpayer dollars.
“It’s time for House Republicans to put patriotic duty over party loyalty and join Democrats in stopping this madness,” the statement added.
Some Democrats have also called for invoking the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office, arguing that his recent rhetoric shows he is unfit to lead.
The sharp reaction comes after Trump renewed his threats on Truth Social, saying he does not want to destroy Iran but “it probably will” happen if Tehran fails to meet his demands regarding the Strait of Hormuz.
The situation remains highly tense as Trump’s deadline approaches and diplomatic efforts, including Pakistan’s mediation role, continue in the background.
