US President Donald Trump reportedly urged Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to avoid any further escalation in a deepening diplomatic dispute with China during a phone call this week, according to multiple Japanese government sources.

Tensions between Tokyo and Beijing had intensified significantly after Takaichi told Japan’s parliament earlier this month that a hypothetical Chinese attack on Taiwan could be deemed a “survival-threatening situation” for Japan, potentially triggering a military response from Japan’s Self-Defense Forces.
China, which claims sovereignty over Taiwan, reacted furiously, demanding Takaichi retract her remarks and imposing retaliatory measures.
Trump’s request, which was first reported by the Wall Street Journal as telling Takaichi to “dial down the volume,” came shortly after he held a separate conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Sources suggested that Trump’s desire for de-escalation was motivated by his aim to preserve a fragile trade war truce and maintain stable economic ties with Beijing.
Although Trump did not explicitly demand that Takaichi retract her comments, his message was interpreted by some Japanese officials as a signal that Washington did not want the Taiwan issue to jeopardize the recent detente with China.
However, Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara denied the report, stating the Japanese government had informed the U.S. daily that Takaichi did not receive such advice.
