Lady Annabel Goldsmith, London Socialite and Philanthropist, Dies Aged 91

Oct 20, 2025 | Latest News, Entertainment

Lady Annabel Goldsmith, the British socialite, philanthropist, and namesake of the iconic Mayfair nightclub Annabel’s, died on 18th October 2025, aged 91.

Born Annabel Vane-Tempest-Stewart in 1934 into an Anglo-Irish aristocratic family, she became Lady Annabel in 1949 when her father succeeded as the 8th Marquess of Londonderry. Her life spanned Britain’s post-war high society, from the glamour of Swinging London to a later career in charitable advocacy.

Lady Annabel was married twice: first to Mark Birley, founder of Annabel’s in 1963, with whom she had three children, Rupert, Robin, and India Jane. She later married financier Sir James Goldsmith, with whom she had Jemima, Zac, and Ben Goldsmith.

Her son Ben described her as “irreplaceable,” saying, “Her life was extraordinary and complete. We are bereft not for her, but for the immense hole she leaves behind.”

Beyond her social prominence, Lady Annabel supported causes related to animal welfare, countryside preservation, and children affected by HIV/AIDS. She published her memoir, Annabel: An Unconventional Life, in 2004, chronicling her storied journey through Britain’s elite circles and her later dedication to philanthropy.
