In an interview with Fox News, Vance commended Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, describing them as “exceptional hosts” who demonstrated “real statesmanship” in facilitating dialogue between the two sides.
Vance’s remarks come after last weekend’s high-stakes talks in Islamabad, where US and Iranian delegations held more than 21 hours of direct negotiations — the first such high-level engagement in over a decade. Although the talks did not yield a final agreement, they helped maintain a fragile ceasefire and kept diplomatic channels open.
Pakistan has been actively involved in back-channel diplomacy since the conflict erupted on February 28, positioning itself as a neutral facilitator leveraging its relations with both Washington and Tehran. The country has also worked closely with China and other regional partners to push for de-escalation.
Field Marshal Asim Munir, in particular, has been credited by multiple sources with playing a quiet but pivotal role through high-level contacts with US and Iranian officials.
Vance’s appreciation highlights the growing international recognition of Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts at a time when the region remains on edge over the Strait of Hormuz and the broader US-Iran standoff.
