Vince Zampella, the visionary co-creator of the Call of Duty franchise and a towering figure in the video game industry, died on Sunday in a single-vehicle car crash. The 55-year-old executive was traveling on the Angeles Crest Highway, north of Los Angeles, when his vehicle reportedly veered off the road and struck a concrete barrier. According to the California Highway Patrol, the car was quickly engulfed in flames following the impact. Zampella and a second occupant, who was ejected from the vehicle, both succumbed to their injuries.

Zampella’s career spanned decades and reshaped the landscape of modern shooters. After co-founding Infinity Ward in 2002 and launching the iconic Call of Duty series, he led the development of landmark titles like Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2. Following a high-profile legal battle with Activision, he co-founded Respawn Entertainment, the studio behind Titanfall, Apex Legends, and the Star Wars Jedi series. At the time of his death, Zampella was a top executive at Electronic Arts, where he had recently been credited with the successful revitalization of the Battlefield franchise.
