Australia Sanctions BLA for Terrorist Activities

May 11, 2026 | Global Affairs, Latest News

The Australian government has announced counter-terrorism financing sanctions against the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and its senior leaders, effective May 8, 2026, under the Charter of the United Nations (Listed Persons and Entities) Amendment (No. 1) Instrument 2026.

Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong stated that the BLA has been involved in violent terrorist attacks across Pakistan, targeting civilians, critical infrastructure, foreign nationals, and the Pakistani state.

“The Australian Government is committed to countering terrorism and violent extremism,” said Minister Wong. “These sanctions will disrupt the financial support networks that enable terrorist operations, recruitment, and the spread of harmful ideologies.”

The BLA, active in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran, is now subject to strict financial restrictions. Aliases and affiliates such as the Baloch Liberation Army, Majeed Brigade, and Fateh Squad are also included in the sanctions.

These sanctions make it a criminal offense to use or deal with the assets of listed individuals or entities, or to provide them with assets. Violators face significant fines and imprisonment of up to 10 years.

“Australia’s counter-terrorism sanctions are targeted and proportionate, designed to uphold international peace and security,” Wong added.
