FC Barcelona is set to return to the renovated Camp Nou for their match against Athletic Club this Saturday afternoon, marking the first time they have played at the iconic stadium since May 2023. The club has secured official permission to occupy 45,401 seats for the match, following the granting of an occupation license for Phase 1B of the ongoing renovation, which allows for the opening of the main stand and the south end.

The decision to return for the partial opening, after initially being granted a smaller 27,000-seat license (Phase 1A), follows repeated delays to the ambitious €1.5 billion Espai Barça renovation project. The total capacity of the completed new stadium, which is officially named Spotify Camp Nou due to a €280 million title rights deal, is planned to be 105,000 seats, making it the largest stadium in Europe. Full completion of the project, which includes a retractable roof and 360-degree screens, is currently scheduled for 2026 or potentially 2027.

The club has also successfully sought and received UEFA’s approval to switch their designated home ground from the temporary Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium (Montjuïc) to the newly opened Camp Nou section for their Champions League campaign, with optimism about hosting Eintracht Frankfurt there on December 9. The return is a significant emotional and financial boost, with the club hoping the increased attendance will generate much-needed revenue.
