WhatsApp is introducing a new version of a status update feature, called “About,” similar to Instagram Notes, allowing users to post a short text update visible to others. The feature is intended for users to quickly share what they are doing, provide a conversation starter, or inform contacts of their current availability.

The company notes that this “About” status is actually a relaunch of WhatsApp’s very first feature. However, the update makes the status significantly more visible: contacts can now see the status at the top of their one-on-one chats and on user profiles. Additionally, users can tap on a contact’s About status directly to reply to it.

By default, the WhatsApp About status will disappear after 24 hours, mirroring Instagram Notes, though users will have the option to adjust this timer for a quicker or longer duration. Users can also control their privacy settings, deciding whether the status is visible only to their contacts or if it is more publicly visible. While the new feature currently only supports text and lacks the video and music integration of Instagram Notes, WhatsApp confirms it is rolling out to mobile users starting this week.
