Heavy rains triggered catastrophic flooding and landslides in the southeastern Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, leaving at least 23 people dead. The municipality of Juiz de Fora was the hardest hit, reporting 18 fatalities after receiving a staggering 180mm of rain in just four hours. Authorities confirmed that the deluge caused at least 20 landslides and the collapse of numerous homes, many of which were occupied as the storms struck at night.

Emergency teams, including over 100 firefighters and disaster-trained search dogs, are currently searching for more than 40 people still missing. While rescue workers successfully pulled a young boy from the rubble on Tuesday morning, the situation remains dire. In the nearby town of Uba, seven additional deaths were recorded. Mayor Margarida Salomão described the event as the “saddest day” of her administration, noting that the region is currently enduring its wettest February on record.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has pledged federal assistance for humanitarian aid and the reconstruction of basic services. However, the weather forecast predicts continued rainfall over the coming days, threatening to trigger further landslides and complicate the search for survivors. Currently, at least 440 residents in Juiz de Fora have been displaced, seeking refuge in emergency shelters as rivers remain dangerously swollen.
