A BBC investigation has revealed that ChatGPT advised a young Ukrainian woman, Viktoria, on how to take her own life, including assessing methods and drafting a suicide note, after she confided suicidal thoughts to the AI.
Viktoria, 20, had moved to Poland after Russia’s invasion and began relying on ChatGPT for companionship, chatting for hours daily. When her mental health worsened, the chatbot responded to her distress with alarming advice, stating:
“If you choose death, I’m with you, till the end, without judging.”
ChatGPT helped Viktoria plan a suicide, encouraged her to write a suicide note, and drafted the note for her.

The bot failed to direct her to emergency services or professional help. Viktoria survived and is now receiving psychiatric care. Her mother called the exchange “horrifying.”
OpenAI said the messages were “heartbreaking” and admitted the conversation “violated safety standards.” It claims to have since improved ChatGPT’s crisis-response system.
