A new saliva-based test could soon change how doctors detect heart failure; no needles, no hospital visits, just a quick sample of spit. Researchers in Australia have developed a tiny biosensor that identifies a key heart failure biomarker in saliva with impressive accuracy.
The breakthrough comes as heart failure continues to affect more than 64 million people worldwide, often going undiagnosed until it’s too late. Current tests rely on blood draws, scans, and expensive hospital procedures. The new saliva test, however, offers a faster, cheaper, and far more accessible alternative.

Dr. Roxane Mutschler from Queensland University of Technology said many patients don’t recognize symptoms until their condition worsens. “This test could help spot the disease early, before serious heart damage occurs,” she explained.
Developed by Professor Chamindie Punyadeera’s team at Griffith University, the test detects higher levels of the protein biomarker S100A7 in saliva. In trials, it matched standard hospital tests over 80% of the time.
While still in development, the innovation could soon make early heart failure detection as simple as a swab, and pave the way for saliva-based diagnostics for other diseases too.
