China has initiated a massive humanitarian relief operation, sending 60,000 tons of rice to Cuba to combat the island’s worsening food and energy shortages. The Cuban Embassy in Beijing confirmed on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, that the latest consignment has set sail, following an initial delivery of 4,800 tons that arrived earlier in January. This shipment is part of a broader $80 million assistance package approved by President Xi Jinping, which also includes critical financial aid to repair Cuba’s deteriorating electrical grid and purchase essential medical equipment.

China just donated enough rice in ONE BATCH to feed all of Cuba for a whole month. https://t.co/H6ESiAluoU

The arrival of these staples comes at a desperate time for Havana, where rice, a primary dietary staple, has become either unavailable or prohibitively expensive for most citizens. While the Cuban government continues to attribute the crisis to the long-standing United States blockade, international analysts point to a combination of external pressure and domestic structural inefficiencies. Beyond state-level aid, grassroots organizations like CodePink and various European activist groups have also mobilized, delivering an additional 35 tons of medical and humanitarian supplies to help the nation navigate its most severe economic downturn in decades.
