China Grants Visa-Free Access to British and Canadian Citizens

Feb 17, 2026 | Latest News, Global Affairs

In a major diplomatic breakthrough signaling a strategic realignment in the West, the People’s Republic of China officially launched its unilateral visa-free entry policy for ordinary passport holders from the United Kingdom and Canada today. The move follows back-to-back state visits to Beijing in January by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, both of whom sought to “reset” relations and insulate their economies from an increasingly “mercurial” United States.

Visa-Free Travel: The Technicals

Effective from February 17, 2026, until December 31, 2026, citizens of the UK and Canada can enter mainland China without a visa under the following conditions:

  • Duration: Stays of up to 30 days per entry.

  • Eligible Purposes: Tourism, business, visiting relatives/friends, cultural exchanges, and transit.

  • Travel Documents: Valid ordinary passports are required (diplomatic and official passport holders continue to follow existing bilateral protocols).

  • Scope: The policy brings the UK and Canada in line with a growing list of 79 countries—including France, Germany, and Italy—granted similar exemptions as Beijing aggressively courts international travelers and foreign investment.

The “January Pivot” Recap

The visa waiver is the first tangible result of the high-stakes diplomacy conducted last month:

  • UK-China Ties: PM Starmer’s visit—the first by a British premier in eight years—resulted in a “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership” focus, with agreements on green technology, healthcare, and finance.

  • Canada-China Resilience: PM Carney, leading Canada’s new government, negotiated a significant reduction in tariffs for Chinese electric vehicles (EVs), allowing 49,000 units into the Canadian market annually. Carney emphasized moving Canada from “reliance to resilience” by diversifying trade away from the U.S.

“A Stabilizing Anchor”: Wang Yi Meets Chancellor Friedrich Merz

On the sidelines of the 62nd Munich Security Conference on Saturday, February 14, China’s top diplomat Wang Yi held a pivotal meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

  • The New Level: Wang Yi called for elevating the China-Germany All-round Strategic Partnership to a “new level,” praising Merz’s opening speech which emphasized European “strategic autonomy.”

  • China’s Expectation: Wang urged Germany to act as a “booster” for China-EU practical cooperation and a “stabilizing anchor” for strategic relations, signaling Beijing’s desire for a predictable European partner as the bloc navigates its own tensions with Washington.

  • Upcoming Visit: Reports indicate that Chancellor Merz is preparing for his inaugural visit to China later this month to further align commercial and climate interests.
