Swiss food giant Nestlé announced on Friday, March 27, 2026, that a massive shipment of approximately 12 tons of KitKat chocolate bars was stolen earlier in the week. The cargo, consisting of 413,793 individual bars, disappeared while en route from a production facility in Italy to a distribution center in Poland. Despite ongoing efforts by law enforcement, Nestlé confirmed that both the transport vehicle and its entire load remain missing, sparking concerns that the stolen confectionery could soon enter unofficial sales channels across Europe.

To combat the illegal sale of these items, Nestlé is leveraging a unique batch-coding system assigned to every bar. A spokesperson for KitKat stated that retailers, wholesalers, and consumers can identify if a product is part of the stolen cache by scanning the on-pack batch numbers. Nestlé has integrated an alert system that provides clear instructions on how to report a match directly to the company. While the company added a touch of wit by “appreciating the criminals’ exceptional taste,” they emphasized that sophisticated cargo theft is an escalating and serious trend affecting businesses of all sizes globally.
