A new WhatsApp beta for Android (version 2.26.3.10) revealed that Meta is developing a “Thinking Mode” for its built-in AI assistant. This update marks a significant shift from the current “Fast Mode,” which is the default for all users and prioritizes speed over depth. The new mode is designed for complex tasks that require heavy reasoning, such as multi-step problem solving, detailed summarization, and strategic planning. By allowing the AI to “slow down” and process context more thoroughly, Meta aims to bring WhatsApp on par with advanced rivals like OpenAI’s reasoning models.

Users will be able to toggle between these two distinct interaction styles directly from a new menu in the Meta AI chat bar. A thunderbolt icon will represent the traditional Fast Mode, ideal for quick questions and everyday tasks, while a lightbulb icon will indicate that Thinking Mode is active. While the reasoning-heavy responses will take slightly longer to generate, they are expected to be far more structured and accurate, particularly for research-oriented queries or code debugging.

This feature is currently “under development” and is not yet accessible to the general public or even most beta testers. However, its appearance in the code suggests that Meta is preparing for a major rollout of its Llama 4-powered architecture later this year. By integrating deep reasoning directly into the world’s most popular messaging app, Meta is positioning WhatsApp to evolve from a simple communication tool into a sophisticated digital assistant capable of handling professional-grade tasks.
