Cuba Reaffirms Right to Trade, Rejects Washington’s ‘Military Coercion’

Jan 12, 2026 | Latest News, Global Affairs

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cuba categorically denounces the recent escalatory threats issued by the Government of the United States. Following the illegal and unilateral seizure of Venezuelan oil tankers and the violation of international law in Caracas, the U.S. administration is now attempting to impose a “deal” on the Cuban people through economic strangulation and the threat of force.

Rejection of Unilateral Coercion

Minister of Foreign Relations Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla stated today that Cuba maintains an “absolute and inalienable right” to import fuel and essential resources from any willing partner. “The era of the Monroe Doctrine—or any modern rebrand of it—is over. Cuba does not subordinate its sovereignty to the unilateral coercive measures of the United States, nor do we lend ourselves to blackmail,” the Minister declared.

The Ministry further clarified that the “Security Services” cited by Washington were provided under mutual cooperation agreements and that Cuba has never received monetary compensation for such solidarity. We mourn the 32 Cuban nationals who lost their lives during the recent U.S. operation in Caracas—a blatant act of aggression against a brotherly nation.

Sovereignty Over “Deals”

In response to claims that the Cuban government must “make a deal” or face “zero oil,” President Miguel Díaz-Canel affirmed that the political model of Cuba is a decision of its people alone.

“Those who turn human lives into business transactions have no moral authority to point fingers at Cuba,” President Díaz-Canel stated. “No one dictates what we do. Our nation braces for this new era of aggression with the same dignity that has sustained us since 1959.”

Humanitarian Impact

The U.S. administration’s tactic of piracy—confiscating tankers in international waters—has directly contributed to a growing fuel and electricity crisis on the island. This is not “diplomacy”; it is a systematic violation of the human rights of 11 million Cubans.

Call to the International Community

Cuba calls upon the international community to condemn these “Donroe Doctrine” policies, which seek to transform the Western Hemisphere into a theater of colonial supremacy. We reaffirm our commitment to peace, but we remind the world that the Cuban spirit cannot be broken by sanctions, threats, or the “hysterical” rhetoric of those who seek to destabilize the region.
