The Walt Disney Company has executed a landmark three-year licensing agreement with OpenAI, becoming the first major content partner for Sora, OpenAI’s generative AI video platform.
The deal, which also includes a $1 billion equity investment by Disney in OpenAI, will allow Sora to generate short, user-prompted social videos featuring over 200 beloved characters from the Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars franchises, including iconic figures like Mickey Mouse, Darth Vader, and characters from Frozen and Moana.

This move represents a significant pivot for Disney, which had previously taken aggressive legal action against other AI firms over copyright infringement, now opting to embrace and monetize the technology under controlled terms. Crucially, the agreement explicitly excludes any talent likenesses or voices, focusing on animated, masked, and creature characters, along with their costumes, props, and environments.

Beyond licensing, Disney will become a major OpenAI customer, deploying ChatGPT for its employees and integrating OpenAI’s APIs to build new tools and experiences for Disney+ subscribers.
Both companies affirmed a shared commitment to responsible AI use and protecting creator rights, with a curated selection of fan-generated Sora videos even planned for streaming on Disney+ starting in early 2026.
