Election Commission of Pakistan Disqualifies Nine Lawmakers Following Court Conviction

Islamabad, Pakistan – August 5, 2025 – The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has disqualified nine lawmakers, including the leaders of the opposition in the Senate and the National Assembly, in compliance with a recent court order. The ECP issued an official notification today, confirming the disqualification of the parliamentarians who were convicted in multiple anti-terrorism cases related to the May 9 violence.

The disqualified leaders and their constituencies are as follows:

  • Senator Syed Shibli Faraz (Opposition Leader, Senate)
  • Omar Ayub Khan, MNA, NA-18 Haripur (Opposition Leader, National Assembly)
  • Rai Haider Ali Khan, MNA, NA-96 Faisalabad-II
  • Sahibzada Muhammad Hamid Raza, MNA, NA-104 Faisalabad-X
  • Rai Hassan Nawaz Khan, MNA, NA-143 Sahiwal-II
  • Zartaj Gul, MNA, NA-185 D.G Khan-II
  • Muhammad Ansar Iqbal, MPA, PP-73 Sargodha-II
  • Junaid Afzal Sahi, MPA, PP-98 Faisalabad-I
  • Rai Muhammad Murtaza Iqbal, MPA, PP-203 Sahiwal-VI

The ECP’s decision is based on Article 63(1)(h) of the Constitution of Pakistan, which mandates the disqualification of an individual convicted of a crime involving moral turpitude with a sentence of more than two years.

With this decision, the seats of the disqualified parliamentarians in the National and Provincial Assemblies are now vacant. By-elections will be held to fill these seats in the coming months.
