Portugal Battles Wildfires as Heatwave Spurs Emergency Response

Aug 4, 2025 | Global Affairs, Latest News

Lisbon, Portugal – August 4, 2025 – Portuguese authorities are engaged in a massive emergency response to contain multiple wildfires raging across the country, as a severe heatwave fuels the blazes and threatens communities. Over 1,800 firefighters, supported by ground crews and aerial vehicles, have been deployed nationwide to combat the flames.

The fires, which have been burning across three districts, have forced the evacuation of residents from at least two villages. Reports indicate that at least 19 people, including firefighters, have been injured as a result of the ongoing blazes. The most critical hotspots are located in the districts of Ponte da Barca, Arouca, and Penafiel.

The firefighting efforts are taking place amidst a “considerably severe hot weather episode,” with temperatures expected to reach as high as 44 degrees Celsius in some inland regions. In response to the escalating situation, the government has issued a high alert, implementing preventative measures such as banning bonfires and fireworks, and restricting access to certain woodland areas.

The current wildfire season has already seen the amount of burned land triple compared to the same period last year. Authorities are urging the public to exercise extreme caution and cooperate with all emergency measures to prevent further incidents
