The Department of Defense confirms that two U.S. service members and one civilian interpreter were killed, and three other U.S. troops were wounded, during a complex attack that occurred in the Palmyra region of central Syria on Saturday.
The attack targeted a joint U.S.-Syrian patrol that was conducting a key leader engagement in support of ongoing counter-terrorism operations against remnants of the Islamic State (IS) group.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those tragically lost in this cowardly act of violence,” said [Insert Fictional Name], Department of Defense Spokesman. “These individuals were conducting vital work alongside our capable Syrian partners to deny ISIS a safe haven and prevent its resurgence, ensuring the safety of both the Syrian people and the international community.”

The three wounded service members are receiving medical treatment and are reported to be in stable condition.
While the Syrian Interior Ministry has claimed the perpetrator was a member of the Syrian security forces acting on extremist ideological grounds, the United States attributes the attack to elements aligned with or inspired by the Islamic State (ISIS) group. The Department is coordinating closely with the new Syrian government to investigate the incident fully and ascertain all facts, particularly regarding the security failure that led to the breach.
U.S. forces, in conjunction with Syrian partners, have launched immediate and ongoing counter-terrorism operations across Homs province to target IS cells in the region.

Secretary of Defense Statement:
“This attack will not deter our commitment. In fact, it reinforces the necessity of our mission to enable capable Syrian partners to hunt down ISIS networks, deny them sanctuary, and ensure they cannot once again threaten regional or global stability,” said the Secretary of Defense. “As President Trump has stated, we will pursue very serious retaliation against those responsible, and the terrorists who committed this atrocity will be brought to justice. Our strategic approach, centered on training and supporting our Syrian allies, remains vital to our long-term security interests.”
