A large fire at the cargo complex of Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport has disrupted Bangladesh’s critical garment export operations, officials said on Sunday.
The blaze broke out late Saturday in a storage area used for ready-made garment shipments, sending thick plumes of smoke over the runway and forcing temporary suspension of cargo handling and several flights. Firefighters took several hours to bring the flames under control.

No casualties were reported, but authorities are assessing the extent of the damage and the number of export consignments affected. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Bangladesh, the world’s second-largest garment exporter after China, relies heavily on timely air shipments for high-value apparel exports. Industry officials warned that even short-term disruptions could delay deliveries to major Western retailers ahead of the holiday season, adding to recent logistical challenges faced by exporters.
