The Gaza Health Ministry has confirmed the tragic death of a two-week-old infant, Muhammad Khalil Abu al-Khair, who succumbed to severe hypothermia on Monday. The infant had been admitted to an intensive care unit on Sunday as temperatures plummeted across the war-ravaged enclave during the arrival of Storm Byron.
This loss of life underscores the catastrophic humanitarian conditions in Gaza, where extreme weather has exacerbated the suffering of a population already devastated by over a year of conflict.

The Ministry reports that at least 14 individuals lost their lives last week due to the effects of Storm Byron. The storm has caused widespread destruction of essential infrastructure:
- Mass Displacement: Over 53,000 displacement tents were partially or fully flooded, swept away by torrents, or destroyed by high winds.
- Structural Collapse: At least 13 buildings have collapsed across the Gaza Strip due to the severity of the weather.
The Ministry highlights that the impact of the storm has been intensified by the continued restriction of vital humanitarian aid. Despite the ceasefire agreement that entered into force on October 10, the entry of essential shelter materials—including tents and mobile homes—remains blocked. This prevents the provision of adequate protection for thousands of families currently exposed to the elements.

Since October 2023, the ongoing war has resulted in nearly 70,700 fatalities, the majority of whom are women and children, and over 171,000 injuries. The destruction of residential areas has left the population uniquely vulnerable to seasonal weather patterns, with the current blockade on building materials creating a secondary crisis of exposure and illness.
The Health Ministry calls upon the international community and humanitarian organizations to intervene immediately to ensure the delivery of winterization materials and to uphold the protections guaranteed under international humanitarian law.
