Despite existing truce agreements, Israel conducted fresh airstrikes and demolitions in the Gaza Strip and an aerial strike in Lebanon over the weekend, resulting in multiple casualties and raising serious concerns about the stability of regional ceasefires.
The Palestinian Health Ministry reported at least one man was killed in a Gaza City airstrike, pushing the total death toll from Israeli truce-violating strikes in the territory to at least 236, primarily civilians. Heavy gunfire and the demolition of residential buildings were simultaneously reported in neighborhoods including al-Zaytoun and al-Shujaiya, and three air strikes hit Rafah in southern Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a defiant statement on Sunday, asserting that Israel would continue its operations to “systematically eliminate” remaining Hamas pockets in areas under Israeli control. He threatened to “keep up action against Hamas” and confirmed that all Israeli actions in Gaza are reported to Washington. Hamas has refuted Israel’s claims that its forces initiated attacks and presented evidence of what it alleges are numerous Israeli violations since the ceasefire was announced last month.
The instability also spread north, where an Israeli airstrike killed four individuals in Lebanon’s Nabatiyeh district on Saturday. Following the attack, Israeli leaders issued stark warnings, with Defence Minister Israel Katz threatening to “intensify” attacks against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. Netanyahu also claimed without evidence that Hezbollah was attempting to “rearm” and stated that Israel would exercise its “right of self-defence” under the terms of the existing ceasefire agreement with Lebanon.
Furthermore, Israeli forces detained at least 21 Palestinians, including children, during raids conducted across the occupied West Bank on Sunday. The developments underscore the critical failure of the existing truce mechanisms and signal heightened regional instability, despite ongoing U.S. involvement, including monitoring efforts by approximately 200 U.S. troops based in southern Israel. Efforts to finalize a lasting peace, including President Donald Trump’s 20-point plan, remain stalled over major obstacles such as the disarmament of Hamas and a timeline for Israeli withdrawal.
