Israeli Strikes in Doha Condemned as “Reckless” Violation of Sovereignty | Jeopardizing Ceasefire Talks

Sep 9, 2025 | Latest News, Global Affairs

Doha, Qatar – September 9, 2025 – Israel has made a significant escalation that has rocked the Middle East, as on Tuesday afternoon, Israel launched a precision strike against senior Hamas leaders in the capital of Qatar, Doha. The assault that struck a residential compound has been swiftly and violently denounced by Qatar and a chorus of indignation by the rest of the Arab world and the United Nations. The strike came at a time when mediators were busy trying to broker a long term ceasefire agreement.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the attack was a precision strike against people who were directly involved in the atrocious October 7 massacre. According to Israeli media reports, the operation entailed 15 fighter jets and ten munitions that were launched at one target. Although the office of Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu termed the attack as a purely Israeli operation, the White House affirmed that it was aware of the operation, considering the closeness of the huge U.S. airbase at Al-Udeid. This has made it speculative that the U.S administration, led by President Donald Trump, gave a green light to the move.

A Strike in the Middle of Negotiations

The attack is very timely to diplomatic work. Since October 2023, Qatar has been the main mediator between Israel and Hamas, and has hosted the political bureau of Hamas since 2012. The strike occurred when Hamas leaders were said to be in the act of deliberating on their official reaction to a new U.S. proposal on a ceasefire in Gaza. This was a plan that was delivered through mediators and it is said that it was a 60-day truce and the release of 48 hostages in exchange of Palestinian prisoners and good-faith talks on a permanent ceasefire. These delicate efforts have been grossly compromised by the attack on the negotiating party.

Hamas officials affirmed that some of their negotiating delegation were among the targeted. Although there has been no official count of the number of casualties, unconfirmed reports by senior Israeli officials indicate that Hamas chief negotiator Khalil al-Hayya and exiled West Bank leader Zaher Jabarin were among the targets.

Diplomatic Fallout, and International Outrage

The Foreign Ministry of Qatar responded with anger, declaring the strike a flagrant breach of all international laws and norms. The government said it will not put up with this irresponsible Israeli action and the continued destabilization of the region security, or any action that threatens its security and sovereignty. This was also shared by the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, who denounced the blatant breach of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Qatar. The assault on the sovereign territory of Qatar has cast serious doubts on the future of the U.S. relations with its Gulf Arab partners and the stability of the region.

The diplomatic consequences will be swift and severe. The strike does not only threaten a possible ceasefire but also threatens to destabilize a delicate regional balance and isolate Israel of major diplomatic allies who have been instrumental in the mediation process.
