Hurricane Melissa Becomes the Strongest Storm on Earth in 2025

Hurricane Melissa has intensified into a Category 5 monster, with winds reaching 175 mph, making it the strongest storm on the planet this year. The storm’s outer bands are already battering Jamaica, where authorities have ordered mass evacuations across coastal areas amid warnings of 40 inches of rain, 13 feet of storm surge, and catastrophic 160 mph winds.

Meteorologists say Melissa’s rapid intensification, a 70 mph wind increase in just 24 hours, is linked to warming oceans and climate-driven atmospheric changes.

The US State Department is monitoring the situation, preparing to send emergency aid as communities brace for impact. In the skies, NOAA hurricane hunters flew missions through extreme turbulence to collect critical data, calling Melissa “the most turbulent hurricane ever experienced.”

Officials warn that mountain towns may face even stronger winds than coastal areas, with the potential for total structural failure and massive flooding across Jamaica tonight and into Tuesday.
