Muhammad Aurangzeb Outlines Strategy to Improve Governance and Efficiency of State-Owned Enterprises

ISLAMABAD – August 12, 2025 – Minister for Finance, Revenue, and Economic Affairs, Muhammad Aurangzeb, today outlined the government’s key fiscal reforms and privatization strategy during a session of the Senate. The Minister highlighted significant changes to the pension system and detailed a comprehensive plan to address the financial challenges posed by State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs).

In his remarks, Minister Aurangzeb confirmed that the government has implemented a new pension system designed to reduce long-term liabilities and bolster financial stability. He also brought attention to the substantial financial losses incurred by SOEs and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to tackling this issue through a robust privatization drive. The Minister Aurangzeb stated;

“The privatization of 24 state-owned enterprises has been handed over to the Privatization Commission. We are working on transferring these entities to the private sector to improve their performance and efficiency. He further specified that eight of these entities have been earmarked for privatization within the current fiscal year.”

The Minister also emphasized the importance of a new governance framework being implemented to ensure better management, noting that private sector involvement can bring fresh perspectives and efficiency. He praised the public-private partnership model of the Sindh government as an example of an initiative that improves service delivery and enhances the private sector’s role.

Aurangzeb concluded by highlighting the government’s focus on reinvesting funds saved from SOE reforms into crucial social sectors such as health, education, and social protection. He reiterated his commitment to accountability by consistently participating in meetings and discussions of the Finance Committees of both the Senate and the National Assembly to answer questions about the government’s financial policies.
