Donald Trump escalated a growing diplomatic rift with Madrid by threatening to terminate all trade with Spain. The ultimatum was delivered during an Oval Office meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, following Spain’s refusal to allow U.S. forces to use jointly operated bases for the ongoing war against Iran. Trump dismissed Spain’s sovereign restrictions on the Rota and Morón bases, asserting, “We could use their base if we want… nobody’s going to tell us not to,” before declaring that the U.S. “doesn’t want anything to do” with the country.

The threat stems from Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s vocal opposition to the “unilateral” U.S.-Israeli military campaign, which Madrid argues lacks a United Nations mandate. Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares confirmed that Spanish territory was not used in the initial strikes, prompting Trump to also cite Spain’s failure to meet NATO defense spending targets as a secondary justification for the trade freeze. The move has sent shockwaves through the European Union, which handles trade negotiations collectively for all member states, making a targeted blockade against a single member legally and logistically complex.

In response, the Spanish government issued a firm statement emphasizing that any review of trade must respect international law and the autonomy of private enterprises. While Chancellor Merz has sought to maintain a more cooperative stance with Washington, Spain’s defiance marks the deepest fracture in the Western alliance since the conflict began. As the “broad wave” of strikes continues, the potential for a transatlantic trade war looms, adding economic instability to an already volatile global landscape.
