Pakistan–Afghanistan Conflict Intensifies After Drone Interceptions and Airstrikes

Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan intensified on Friday after Islamabad reported shooting down multiple drones and carrying out precision strikes on suspected militant infrastructure across the border. The escalation follows a month of growing hostilities after Pakistan launched an aerial campaign targeting hideouts of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which Islamabad accuses of orchestrating a surge of attacks inside the country.

Pakistani security officials stated that overnight operations struck several strategic sites, including militant camps and logistical facilities in cities such as Kabul and Kandahar. According to officials, the objective was to dismantle militant networks operating from Afghan territory. However, the Afghan Taliban government strongly denied the presence of such militant bases and accused Pakistan of violating its sovereignty.

Key Developments in the Latest Escalation

Several major incidents marked the latest round of tensions between the two neighbors:

  • Pakistani airstrikes reportedly targeted four locations, including a training facility and ammunition depot linked to militants.

  • Afghan authorities’ claims that civilian homes were destroyed and several people, including women and children, were killed.

  • Drone attacks near Kohat, where Pakistan said three rudimentary drones launched from Afghan territory were intercepted before causing major damage.

  • Cross-border retaliation, with Afghan defense officials claiming their forces struck Pakistani military sites in the Kohat region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Diplomatic Deadlock and Regional Uncertainty

The confrontation highlights a deepening diplomatic crisis between Islamabad and the Taliban-led government in Afghanistan. Pakistan maintains that Kabul must stop harboring TTP leaders and dismantle militant safe havens operating along the border. Afghan authorities, however, reject these accusations and accuse Pakistan of attacking civilian targets.

Recent clashes along the frontier have also disrupted trade and forced residents near the border to flee their homes. With both sides exchanging military actions and accusations, analysts warn that the situation could spiral into a broader regional security crisis if tensions remain unresolved.
