Diplomatic Breakthrough: Pakistan and Armenia Established Bilateral Ties in Tianjin

The Tianjin Agreement

A historic step has been made by Pakistan and Armenia as they have officially established diplomatic relations between the two countries. It was announced on August 31, 2025, in the context of the SCO Summit in Tianjin, China, when foreign ministers of both countries, Ishaq Dar (Pakistan) and Ararat Mirzoyan (Armenia), handed over a joint communiqué declaring the start of official relations

This is being considered a big milestone since decades have passed without any formal relations between the two countries. The signing in Tianjin demonstrates that both parties are now prepared to proceed with friendship and co-operation. The SCO system helped in uniting them and provided them with the opportunity in a neutral environment.

History: Between Alienation and Participation.

Pakistan and Armenia have not had any diplomatic relations in many years. This was predominantly because of Pakistan being a strong supporter of Azerbaijan in the Nagorno-Karabakh war, as Armenia and Azerbaijan were arch enemies. Due to this, Pakistan refused to acknowledge Armenia and maintained a diplomatic distance between itself and the country.

But this is not the case recently. Armenia and Azerbaijan have signed a peace accord to cease hostilities between the two nations for decades. This has brought a new atmosphere to the region and has made opportunities available to countries such as Pakistan to rethink their policies.

There were discussions and proposals in the past of constructing some kind of contact, but nothing was made real. The Tianjin announcement is such a moment, breaking decades of estrangement and turning it into engagement and cooperation.

Behind the Rapprochement drivers

A number of forces compelled Pakistan and Armenia to actually reach out. In the case of Armenia, friendship with Pakistan is not in vain, as it is trying to form foreign relations that are not based on Moscow after many years of conflict with Azerbaijan. Through new friendships, Armenia hopes to improve its world standing and to find additional economic and cultural allies.

In the case of Pakistan, this measure is associated with its policy of increasing diplomatic reach. Building a relationship with Armenia will give Pakistan a greater involvement in the South Caucasus region, which is increasingly gaining importance in terms of trade routes, energy projects, and regional cooperation.

Pakistan and Armenia establish Diplomatic Relations

There was also regional geopolitics. Both countries have had the opportunity to embark on a new page with the SCO Summit as the vehicle. The role of the great powers, such as China and Russia, in promoting stability in the area also led to the environment in which such a breakthrough in diplomacy became a possibility.

Outlooks, and Future Prospects

The development of diplomatic relations will provide new opportunities to both Pakistan and Armenia. Among the most obvious ones is the fact that now Pakistani people, even in the UAE and other nations, can pay a visit to Armenia. This will enhance tourism, culture, and education. Trade relationships can also be explored by the two parties, and collaboration in other areas like textiles, agriculture, and technology may be possible. Face-to-face interaction may be a significant tool in helping establish trust and understanding between the two countries.

Meanwhile, there are some challenges that should be handled very carefully. Pakistan always used to be very close to Azerbaijan, and this new relationship with Armenia will have to be balanced without raising any doubts. The doubts within some political or general circles may also be present due to the long history of alienation. To continue the momentum, both nations will need to take things one step at a time and focus on the areas in which cooperation yields obvious benefits.

Regional-Global Significance: A New Chapter in Diplomacy

The opening of relations between Pakistan and Armenia has more than bilateral value. In the South Caucasus, it is the beginning of a transition towards stability following decades of tension. Pakistan is demonstrating that it is pro-peace and co-operation in the region, rather than historical violence, by recognizing Armenia and establishing formal relations. In the case of Armenia, the action will be an opportunity to expand its relationships and escape isolation, particularly in a period when it needs new allies following the peace agreement with Azerbaijan. The trend also reflects on the growing relevance of the region as a trade route between Asia and Europe, and its strategic importance in terms of trading and connectivity.

At a broader level, the move highlights the shift in the foreign policy of Pakistan. The involvement of Armenia is helping Pakistan diversify its diplomatic map and is demonstrating to the world that it can respond to new geopolitical realities.

It also creates an image of Pakistan as a state eager to promote dialogue and peace outside of its immediate vicinity. The Tianjin accord is thus not merely one of establishing embassies or official contacts, it is of establishing a mood of positive diplomacy. Nevertheless, this diplomatic breakthrough has led to a new beginning and given the two nations an opportunity to convert hostility into collaboration and develop a long-term relationship.
