On December 26, 2025, a devastating explosion struck the Imam Ali bin Abi Talib Mosque in Homs, Syria, during Friday prayers, killing at least eight worshippers and wounding 18 others. The mosque, located in the predominantly Alawite neighborhood of Wadi al-Dahab, was targeted by explosive devices planted inside the building. The extremist group Saraya Ansar al-Sunna claimed responsibility via Telegram, vowing that their campaign would “continue and escalate.” This group, which surfaced following the 2024 ouster of Bashar al-Assad, has a history of sectarian violence against Christians, Druze, and Alawite minorities. This bombing marks the second major assault on a religious site under the new administration, following a lethal church bombing in Damascus earlier this year.
President Ahmed al-Sharaa’s government faces immense pressure to curb this rising tide of sectarian terrorism. While the administration has promised protection for all minorities, this latest atrocity underscores the fragile security landscape of post-Assad Syria.
