Pakistan and Egypt Agree to Elevate Ties to Strategic Partnership

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty concluded a landmark two-day official visit to Pakistan on Sunday, during which both countries agreed to transform their historic fraternal relations into a full-fledged strategic partnership with sweeping new initiatives in trade, investment, defence, security, and counter-terrorism.

Key outcomes announced at a joint press conference by Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar and FM Abdelatty:

  • Economic & Business Breakthrough Pakistan will immediately share a list of 250 leading Pakistani business houses (expandable to 500 within six months) to be placed on an Egypt-approved “White List” for fast-track business visas and enhanced commercial engagement. Establishment of the Pakistan-Egypt Business Council and a high-level Pakistan-Egypt Business Forum co-chaired by the two Foreign Ministers, with its inaugural session in Cairo in Q2 2026.
  • Institutional Revival Bilateral Political Consultations to resume in Q1 2026, followed by the long-overdue Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC) meeting in Q2 2026 — the first since 2010.
  • Defence & Security Cooperation FM Abdelatty met Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir at GHQ. Both sides reaffirmed continued high-level military exchanges, training collaboration, and joint efforts against cross-border terrorism. Egypt offered to share its successful holistic counter-terrorism model combining security, socio-economic, and moderate religious discourse led by Al-Azhar Al-Sharif.
  • Education & Religious Cooperation Egypt doubled scholarships for Pakistani students at Al-Azhar University and will expand specialised courses on countering extremist ideology through moderate Islamic teachings.
  • Regional Issues Both countries pledged intensified coordination on the Palestinian cause, with Egypt inviting Pakistan to the upcoming Gaza Reconstruction Conference. Strong convergence on Jammu & Kashmir, Afghanistan, and multilateral platforms.

During separate calls on President Asif Ali Zardari, the Egyptian FM delivered a personal message from President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and expressed Egypt’s keenness to attract Pakistani investment in energy, logistics, construction, agriculture, mining, and IT.

President Zardari emphasised that 2025 marks 77 years of diplomatic ties and called for “a more structured and forward-looking” relationship.

Describing Pakistan as his “second home,” FM Abdelatty declared: “Sky’s the limit for our cooperation.”

The visit has injected unprecedented momentum into Pakistan-Egypt relations, setting the stage for a quantum leap in bilateral trade (currently ~$300 million), defence collaboration, and joint leadership on regional peace and counter-terrorism.
