Hormuz at the Heart of Negotiations
The Islamabad meeting reflects a growing alignment among key regional powers seeking both an immediate ceasefire and longer-term mechanisms to prevent further disruption in the Gulf.
A major focus of the discussions was the reopening of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies that has been largely shut down amid escalating hostilities involving Iran, the United States, and Israel. The closure has driven up oil prices and heightened fears of a prolonged global economic shock.
Pathways to Ceasefire and Stability
Participants explored a range of proposals to restore maritime traffic, including the creation of a multinational management consortium and the introduction of structured transit fees similar to those used in the Suez Canal. These proposals, reportedly shared with Washington and discussed with Tehran, are seen as potential confidence-building measures that could pave the way for broader diplomatic engagement.
Pakistan’s unique position, maintaining working relationships with both Iran and the United States, has enabled it to act as a crucial intermediary. Early signs of progress include Iran’s willingness to permit additional Pakistani-flagged vessels to transit the strait, signaling cautious openness to de-escalation steps. Below are the key objectives of the Islamabad dialogues:
- Regional powers are coordinating efforts to de-escalate the Iran conflict and stabilize the Gulf
- Reopening the Strait of Hormuz is a central priority to restore global energy flows
- Pakistan is playing a pivotal intermediary role between Iran, the U.S., and regional actors
