Uzbek President to Launch “Strategic Cooperation Council” in Pakistan

On February 4, 2026, the Pakistan Foreign Office confirmed that Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev will arrive in Islamabad tomorrow for a high-stakes two-day state visit. This visit marks a turning point in regional connectivity, following the successful conclusion of the 10th Intergovernmental Commission earlier this week. The two nations have already agreed on an ambitious roadmap to quadruple bilateral trade from $450 million to $2 billion within the next two years, supported by an expanded Preferential Trade Agreement that will increase the list of tax-exempt goods from 17 to nearly 100 items.

A centerpiece of the visit will be the inaugural session of the Uzbekistan–Pakistan Strategic Cooperation Council, a new high-level body designed to oversee long-term industrial and energy partnerships. Leaders are also expected to authorize fieldwork for the $4.6 billion Trans-Afghan railway, a 647-km project that will link Uzbekistan to Pakistan’s rail network via the Kharlachi border. This “Central-South Asian Gateway” is projected to reduce transport costs by 40%, providing landlocked Uzbekistan with direct, high-speed access to the deep-water ports of Karachi and Gwadar.

Beyond infrastructure, the visit will see the signing of several MoUs in pharmaceuticals, textiles, and mining. With 228 Pakistani companies already operating in Uzbekistan, the two leaders aim to transition from simple trade to deep industrial collaboration, including joint manufacturing of agricultural machinery and tractors in Pakistan.
