A massive fire that erupted in a seven-storey office building in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Tuesday afternoon has tragically killed at least 22 people, with authorities confirming that most victims, including 15 women and one pregnant woman, likely died from asphyxiation due to the thick black smoke. Central Jakarta police chief Susatyo Purnomo Condro stated that the blaze, which broke out around midday while many employees were on lunch break, is believed to have been sparked by a drone battery explosion on the first floor, quickly spreading the flames throughout the building.

The office housed PT Terra Drone Indonesia, a company specializing in drone services for industrial clients, making the presence of numerous batteries a crucial factor in the disaster. Firefighters deployed over 100 personnel and 28 engines to contain the blaze and rescue trapped employees, with dramatic footage showing workers being evacuated from the upper floors, including the challenging sixth floor, via aerial ladders. With the fire now extinguished, rescue teams are focused on searching the upper levels and identifying the victims, while the police have committed to a thorough forensic investigation, questioning witnesses and the building owner to determine if negligence contributed to the high death toll.
