Presidential Message: A Violation of the UN Charter
President Asif Ali Zardari reminded the world that January 5 marks the 1949 adoption of the UN resolution recognizing the disputed status of the territory. He noted that the passage of seven decades has not diminished the legitimacy of the Kashmiri demand. “The continued denial of this right is a clear contradiction of the UN Charter and international law,” the President stated, emphasizing that the commitment remains an unfulfilled debt of the United Nations.
Prime Minister’s Address: The Path to Regional Peace
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif linked the stability of South Asia directly to the resolution of the dispute. He urged the international community to:
- Press India to halt widespread human rights violations.
- Reverse the illegal, unilateral actions of August 5, 2019.
- Repeal draconian laws in the occupied territory. “A just resolution is the only way to achieve durable peace in South Asia,” the Prime Minister asserted, pledging that Pakistan will continue to be the voice of Kashmiris at every global forum.

- AJK Leadership: AJK President Barrister Sultan Mahmood Chaudhry and Prime Minister Faisal Mumtaz Rathore expressed dismay over the UN’s “lackadaisical approach.” They emphasized that holding a plebiscite remains the primary legal and moral responsibility of the international community.
- Provincial Support: Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti underscored that self-determination is not a “political slogan” but a legally recognized international commitment that India continues to violate through intransigence.
The leadership collectively demanded that the United Nations discharge its responsibilities to ensure a free and impartial plebiscite as enshrined in the UN Security Council resolutions.
