Media Crackdown: Pakistan Pledges ‘Massive Scale’ Action Against Fake News

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi announced a major crackdown on the spread of fake news, stating that the Information Ministry and the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) will take action “on a massive scale.” Speaking in Lahore, the minister claimed that up to 90% of news on social media in recent days is fake, which cannot be permitted to “create panic” in the country.

While stressing his belief in freedom of expression and the liberty to criticize, Naqvi drew a sharp distinction between responsible journalists, who are accountable to a systematic check-and-balance process within national media, and those who spread baseless information on social media platforms. He warned that those spreading fake news, including vloggers and podcasters, will be targeted, asserting, “We are very clear on this.” The minister confirmed that a new regulatory body may also be in the process of establishment to support this measure.

Separately, Naqvi addressed the ongoing issue of Afghan migrants, alleging that they are being “protected” in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) despite the federal decision for repatriation. He claimed illegal Afghans were involved in recent terror activities and warned the KP government to prioritize national security over politics by implementing the federal policy. Station House Officers across the country have been tasked with identifying and locating all illegal Afghans.
