Pakistan Shortlists Two Candidates for Tiangong Space Station Mission

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) announced on Saturday that Pakistan’s Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) has achieved a significant breakthrough in the Pakistan Human Spaceflight Programme (PHSP). Following a rigorous selection process, two Pakistani candidates have been shortlisted by the Astronauts Centre of China (ACC) to begin advanced training for an upcoming mission to the Tiangong Space Station.

A Landmark Achievement in National Space Exploration

The selection marks the successful completion of the secondary phase of the astronaut selection process. After an initial screening in Pakistan, candidates underwent comprehensive medical, psychological, and aptitude assessments at the ACC in Beijing, adhering to international human spaceflight standards.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, whose vision has been instrumental in driving the national space agenda, this initiative represents a deepening of the strategic partnership between Islamabad and Beijing.

Training and Mission Timeline

As per the bilateral “Astronaut Cooperation Agreement” signed in February 2025 between Suparco and the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA):

  • Advanced Training: The two shortlisted candidates will now undergo six months of intensive astronaut training at the ACC.
  • Mission Launch: Following training, one final candidate will be selected to join a spaceflight mission scheduled for October/November 2026.
  • Mission Role: The Pakistani astronaut will serve as a payload specialist aboard the Tiangong Space Station, conducting vital scientific experiments and performing standard crew duties.

Strengthening the Pakistan-China Strategic Bond

The ISPR highlighted that Pakistan is the first foreign partner selected by China to participate in its prestigious astronaut programme. This cooperation underscores the “all-weather” friendship between the two nations, particularly as China expands its space partnerships following its exclusion from the International Space Station (ISS).

CMSA spokesperson Lin Xiqiang confirmed that the selection process follows the same rigorous three-stage protocol (preliminary, secondary, and final) utilized for Chinese taikonauts, ensuring the highest level of mission readiness.

A Vision for the Future

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif previously emphasized that this collaboration is a testament to Pakistan’s technological aspirations. By sending a citizen to the Tiangong station, Pakistan joins an elite group of nations capable of human spaceflight participation, opening new frontiers for scientific research and national pride.
