Russia’s Ministry of Defense announced Sunday that its troops have seized Rivnopillia and Mala Tokmachka in southern Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region, marking incremental advances against outnumbered Ukrainian defenders amid a broader push on multiple fronts.

The ministry’s Telegram update detailed the captures, noting Rivnopillia—10 km north of Huliaipole—positions Russian forces to encircle the town from north, east, and south, while Mala Tokmachka, 9 km east of Orikhiv, threatens the key Ukrainian logistics hub. Though less intense than eastern battles around Pokrovsk—where hundreds of Russian assaults have infiltrated defenses—the Zaporizhzhia gains reflect Moscow’s numerical and equipment superiority, per analysts.
Ukrainian officials have not confirmed the losses but reported repelling 12 attacks near Huliaipole and five near Orikhiv over the past day, with ongoing clashes. The advances come as Kyiv faces ammunition shortages and manpower strains, despite Western aid pledges.
Peace efforts remain deadlocked. Direct Kyiv-Moscow talks stalled after Russia’s insistence on Ukrainian territorial concessions and demilitarization as ceasefire preconditions. A planned Budapest summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin—Trump’s second bid after August’s fruitless Alaska meeting—fell apart in late October when Moscow rejected an immediate frontline freeze, opting instead for maximalist demands. European leaders, backing Trump’s ceasefire push, criticized Russia’s “unserious” stance, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy urged long-range arms to pressure Moscow.
With winter approaching, the conflict’s toll mounts: over 500,000 military casualties combined and 10 million displaced since 2022. As Russian gains persist, the absence of diplomacy risks further escalation, underscoring the urgent need for mediated breakthroughs.
