President Lai Ching-te reaffirmed Taiwan’s commitment to freedom and democracy on Friday, rejecting China’s renewed call for the island to accept its “one country, two systems” framework.
Speaking at a military base in northern Taiwan’s Hukou during the commissioning of the country’s first battalion of U.S.-made M1A2T Abrams tanks, Lai declared that Taiwan “will forever uphold its free and democratic constitutional system” and will not surrender its sovereignty to Chinese control.

“Accepting the aggressor’s claims and abandoning sovereignty cannot achieve peace,” Lai said, adding that only strength can preserve stability.
His remarks followed Beijing’s statement that it “absolutely will not rule out” the use of force to unify Taiwan, describing reunification as an “irreversible historical trend.”
The U.S., Taiwan’s key defense partner, expressed concern over China’s military activity around the island and the South China Sea, reaffirming its commitment to Taiwan’s self-defense under U.S. law.
