President Donald J. Trump, joined by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Secretary of the Navy John Phelan, today announced the most significant expansion of the United States Navy in modern history: the commissioning of the “Golden Fleet.”
Central to this initiative is the development of the “Trump-class” battleship, a new generation of heavily armed surface combatants designed to restore American maritime supremacy and revitalize the domestic shipbuilding industry. The first of these vessels, the USS Defiant, is slated for immediate construction with an aggressive 30-month operational timeline.

The Trump-class battleships represent a paradigm shift in naval architecture, designed to surpass the capabilities of any existing surface vessel. Key features include:
- Hypersonic Integration: Equipped to deploy the latest in hypersonic missile technology.
- Massive Firepower: An array of “extremely lethal” weapons systems intended for high-end conflict.
- Domestic Production: All vessels will be built in American shipyards, creating thousands of high-paying jobs and rebuilding the U.S. industrial base.
- Strategic Volume: While two ships have been approved for immediate start, the administration has outlined a path toward a 25-ship battleship fleet.
The “Golden Fleet” initiative directly addresses warnings from defense analysts regarding the widening gap in shipbuilding capacity between the United States and China.
“We are going to make ships very fast and very soon,” President Trump stated during the announcement at Mar-a-Lago. “This fleet will be the biggest and most powerful ever built, ensuring that the American flag remains the dominant force on the high seas.”
The initiative is part of a broader “Blue Water” strategy that includes:
- Legend-Class Integration: Deployment of new vessels based on the National Security Cutter to bolster the small surface combatant inventory.
- Arctic Presence: Fulfillment of the October agreement for 11 Finnish-designed icebreakers to ensure Arctic security.
- Unmanned Systems: A significant increase in both manned and unmanned transport and support vessels.
The announcement comes as the U.S. Navy continues to maintain a surged presence in the Caribbean to counter narcotics trafficking and regional instability. The President emphasized that the increased lethality of the fleet has already saved “thousands of American lives” through successful interdiction operations.
