US House to Vote on Bill to End Record 42-Day Government Shutdown

The US House of Representatives is set to vote Wednesday on a short-term spending package aimed at ending the longest government shutdown in American history, now entering its 42nd day. The bill, already approved by the Senate, would fund federal agencies for two months and temporarily restore government operations.

Republican leaders expressed optimism the measure would pass despite their slim majority, while Democrats have vowed to oppose it, citing the absence of healthcare subsidy extensions for low-income Americans, a key demand throughout the impasse.

President Donald Trump signaled his support for the bill, saying he would sign it into law once passed. “We’re opening up our country. It should have never been closed,” he said at a Veterans Day event in Virginia.

The shutdown, which began on October 1, has left about one million federal workers unpaid and disrupted key services, including food assistance and air travel. Nearly 1,200 flights were canceled Tuesday as unpaid air traffic controllers called in sick, further pressuring lawmakers to act.

The House Rules Committee advanced the measure early Wednesday after a contentious seven-hour session.

If approved, the deal would avert further economic disruption but only temporarily, government funding is set to expire again on January 30, leaving another potential standoff looming.
