Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had delegated unprecedented authority to Ali Larijani to manage state affairs. According to reports, the move comes as the Islamic Republic faces the dual pressure of nationwide anti-government protests and a 15-day ultimatum from the U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the nuclear program. Larijani, a veteran national security official and former Revolutionary Guards commander, has been tasked with overseeing domestic security, coordinating nuclear talks in Geneva, and liaising with key allies like Russia and Qatar.

While Larijani lacks the religious credentials to succeed Khamenei as Supreme Leader, he is widely viewed as the regime’s most capable crisis manager. Khamenei has reportedly established multiple layers of emergency succession for political and military leadership in the event of a foreign strike. Following Larijani, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and former president Hassan Rouhani are also listed as potential emergency successors to ensure governmental continuity.

In tandem with this political shift, Iran has placed its armed forces on high alert, deploying advanced missile systems near the Persian Gulf and Iraq. Despite active diplomatic channels in Oman and Switzerland, Iranian officials are reportedly operating under the grim assumption that a U.S. military strike may be imminent.
