State Honors, and Funeral Arrangements
Interim leader Professor Muhammad Yunus has declared three days of state mourning across Bangladesh. In a televised address to the nation, Professor Yunus described Begum Zia as a “great guardian” of the country. “Through her uncompromising leadership, the nation was repeatedly freed from undemocratic conditions and inspired to regain liberty,” he stated, while appealing to the public for calm and discipline during the mourning period.
The funeral proceedings are scheduled as follows:
- Funeral Prayers (Janaza): To be held in front of the National Parliament (Jatiya Sangsad) following midday prayers on Wednesday.
- Burial: She will be laid to rest alongside her late husband, former President and military leader Ziaur Rahman.
A Legacy of Leadership
Begum Khaleda Zia’s political journey began following the assassination of her husband in 1981. Emerging from a private life to lead the BNP, she became a symbol of resistance against military rule in the 1980s. In 1991, she made history as Bangladesh’s first female Prime Minister, ushering in a parliamentary system and significant educational reforms. Her career was defined by her fierce rivalry with Sheikh Hasina—a period known as the era of the “Battling Begums”—which shaped the modern political landscape of the country.
