The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) announced a groundbreaking partnership with Meta to combat the surging wave of WhatsApp hacking and financial fraud in Pakistan. This new initiative introduces a sophisticated security mechanism called “Meta OTP,” specifically designed to prevent unauthorized account takeovers. Pakistan will be the first country in the world to implement this feature before its global rollout, reflecting the urgency of addressing the localized rise in social engineering tactics used by scammers.
The core of the new defense is a dual One-Time Password (OTP) system. Under this protocol, a secondary OTP is automatically generated three minutes after the first. If a user accidentally shares their initial code with a fraudster, often under the guise of fake courier calls or service agent impersonations, they can use the second “Meta OTP” to instantly regain control and override the hacker’s access. This secondary layer acts as a critical fail-safe, providing a window for users to realize they have been targeted and secure their digital identity before any financial damage occurs.

Technical discussions between the PTA and Meta are reportedly in their final stages, with the feature expected to launch shortly. Authorities have noted that hackers often use stolen accounts to solicit money from a victim’s contacts, leading to significant identity-based fraud. By implementing this “made-for-Pakistan” security tool, the PTA aims to drastically reduce the success rate of these scams and protect millions of users across the country from digital exploitation.
