Greenland Tensions Grow as Denmark and Europe Push Back Against US Claims

A New Crisis in the Arctic

Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has warned that her country is facing a “decisive moment” after US President Donald Trump once again threatened to seize Greenland by force. Speaking ahead of key meetings in Washington, Frederiksen said the issue is no longer theoretical, stressing that “there is a conflict over Greenland” and that the stakes go far beyond the Arctic island itself.

Denmark Stands Firm

Frederiksen made clear that Denmark is ready to defend its values and principles, including international law and the right of people to decide their own future. In a message shared on social media, she said Denmark would stand its ground “wherever it is necessary, also in the Arctic”. Greenland is a self-governing territory, and polls show its people strongly oppose becoming part of the United States.

Europe Rallies Behind Denmark

Several European leaders have voiced strong support for Denmark. Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson criticised what he called the US’s “threatening rhetoric” and warned that a takeover of Greenland would violate international law. Germany also backed Denmark, saying security in the Arctic is becoming increasingly important and must be handled through cooperation within NATO.

Growing Military Concerns

The renewed dispute has sparked wider discussions about security in the Arctic. Reports suggest European military leaders are considering a possible NATO mission in Greenland to deter threats from Russia and China. Officials from the UK, Germany, and France are said to be involved in early talks, while some NATO members have proposed a new “Arctic Sentry” operation to monitor the region.

Why Greenland Matters

Trump argues that Greenland is vital for US national security because of rising Russian and Chinese activity in the Arctic. The island is rich in minerals and sits in a strategically important location. As global competition for resources grows, Greenland has become a symbol of a much larger struggle for power, influence, and respect for international rules.
