In a significant step toward de-escalating global tensions, Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump held an “excellent” and “thorough” phone conversation on Wednesday. The leaders discussed a wide-ranging agenda including a major increase in U.S. agricultural exports, the critical status of Taiwan, and collaborative approaches to global conflicts.

Economic Breakthrough: Soybean Exports to Hit 20 Million Tonnes
A primary highlight of the call was the potential for a massive expansion in agricultural trade. President Trump confirmed that Beijing is considering increasing its purchase of U.S. soybeans from the current 12 million tonnes to 20 million tonnes.
“The relationship with China, and my personal relationship with President Xi, is an extremely good one,” President Trump stated via Truth Social. “We both realize how important it is to keep it that way.”
This economic progress follows a framework deal reached after the South Korea summit in October, which saw both nations de-escalate tariffs and export controls on rare earth minerals.
Strategic Red Lines: The Taiwan Issue
President Xi characterized Taiwan as “the most important issue” in China-U.S. relations. During the call, he urged the United States to handle arms sales to the island with “prudence,” emphasizing that Beijing must safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The dialogue comes on the heels of an $11 billion U.S. arms sale announced in December. President Xi noted that if both sides work in the “spirit of equality and mutual respect,” they can find ways to address mutual concerns.
Diplomacy and Global Stability
The leaders also exchanged views on:
- Energy Trade: Discussions regarding China’s purchase of American oil and gas.
- Geopolitical Conflicts: Addressing the war in Ukraine and the current situation in Iran.
- April State Visit: President Trump reaffirmed his commitment to visiting China in April, a trip he said he “very much” looks forward to.

China as a “Stabilizing Force”
The call coincided with President Xi’s virtual meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, signaling Beijing’s intent to act as a “stabilizing force” in a period of global unilateralism. Chinese state media characterized the flurry of diplomacy—including recent visits by UK PM Sir Keir Starmer and other Western leaders—as a sign of China’s role as a responsible and rational world power.
