Azerbaijan Nominated for Vice-Presidency of IRENA’s 17th Assembly

Jan 13, 2026 | Global Affairs, Latest News

During the 16th Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in Abu Dhabi, Azerbaijan was officially nominated for one of the four vice-presidential positions for the agency’s 17th session. This nomination, put forward by the “Europe and Others” regional group, underscores Azerbaijan’s growing role in the global energy transition following its successful hosting of COP29 and its recent record-breaking investments in solar and wind infrastructure.

The 16th Assembly, held under the theme “Powering Humanity: Renewable Energy for Shared Prosperity,” also finalized the leadership structure for the upcoming 17th session, scheduled for 2027. While Azerbaijan represents Europe and the West, other regional groups nominated candidates to ensure diverse geographic representation.

During the session, IRENA Director-General Francesco La Camera highlighted a landmark shift in global energy: in 2025, 92% of all newly installed power capacity was renewable. The assembly also addressed the strategic implications of the United States’ withdrawal from the agency, which was officially announced on January 8, 2026. In the wake of the U.S. exit, nations like Spain and Azerbaijan have stepped into prominent leadership roles to maintain the momentum of the global climate agenda.
